Sultanieh Dome Zanjan Where is ZANJAN? ZANJAN is a city in northwestern IRAN. ZANJAN township is 328 km(203 miles) from TEHRAN. Enjoying a mild weather in summer and cold weather in winter, ZANJAN is composed of two great valleys formed by two rivers, "ZANJAN Rood" and "SEFID Rood," between which the Gharavol and Angooran mountains are located. ZANJAN ("dear wife" in FARSI) produces many beautiful Persian tribal rugs, all handmade by nomadic Persian tribes living in northwestern IRAN. The colors of these rugs are usually very bright and lively. Their quality is very good and the rugs last a long time. An authentic ZANJAN Persian rug is an ideal way to add something exotic to a room that could use some flavor. The foundation of Zanjan dates back to the region of Ardeshir Babakan, when it was called "Shahin" or "Shahan." In time, its name was changed to Hodood-Olalam or "Limits of the World." In 372 AH (982 CE), it was described as a flourishing and blessed city with very strong fortifications. Zaidolkabir Zanjan ZANJAN was badly damaged by Mongol attack, but in the region of Sultan Mohammad Khodabandeh, a famous Mongolian ruler also known as Oljaito, the city of Sultanieh (later Zanjan) was made the largest capital of the Ilkhani government and Islamic land. By the order of Oljaito, a fortification was constructed around Sultanieh and a huge castle was build in its midst. He built a cemetery with a high dome (the famous Khodabandeh Dome) for himself. Sultanieh became one of the most important cities of Ilkanan (after TABRIZ) in the region of Oljaito. Oljaito's cemetery was badly damaged by Taymour the lame after the fall of Ilkhanan in 786 AH (1227 CE). Sultanieh fell into decadence in the time of Shah Tahmas Safavid I (930-984 AH/1523-1576) Fath Ali Shah (the Qajar King, 1797-1834 CE) built a summer palace in this city. Today, as the result of the political and administrative conditions and a concentration of several provincial organizations, its population is growing, causing development.
