*Message was: Dear PeterI appreciate your email. Your question is very common for many rug buyers. NAIN or Tabas?
Let me share my two cents knowledge!
NAIN is a small town near Isfahan in central of Iran. TABAS is other small town between two huge deserts of (Dasht-E-Kavir) and (Kvir-E-lut) in northeastern Iran. These two towns are 250 miles away from each other.
NAIN rugs have higher quality compare to TABAS rugs. TABAS and NAIN rugs have similar pattern due to migration of many weavers from NAIN to TABAS around W.W.II due to economic necessity. This fact creates a massive confusion among rug buyers. NAIN rugs with right KPSI have much higher quality and price tag compare to the similar TABAS productions.
How much? There are many factors involved:
1- KPSI
2- Signed Rug
3- Material( Silk, Wool, Kork [baby lamp wool])
4- Age of your rug
5- The visage(pattern)
6- Where did you buy your rug?
The Persian rug experts use different factor called LAA (Farsi [Official language in IRAN] to define quality of NAIN and only NAIN rugs. The LAA means layer or Number that is apply to the number threats in a fringe out of each knots at the end of the NAIN rug. The LAA numbers is a big indication of the price tag. As LAA numbers go lower the price of NAIN rugs go higher. The good quality NAIN is 9 LAA, means you can count 9 threats out of each knots in Fringe. The highest NAIN rugs have 4 LAA that is superfine and is very valuable. (Hard to find!!!)
You can buy NAIN patterns rug from TABAS but you should pay less.
The easiest solution is shop around go to local rug dealers ask for real NAIN and TABAS (Nain) and see the difference. You have to go to at least 3 dealers to get feeling about the price and visage difference.
About your TABAS (NAIN), You mentioned that your rug has 40 RAJ or 210 KPSI. You have a good quality rug. I am not able to define the price of your rug only based on RAJ, Origin and size.
I need to have more information.
Do you have any silk on the rug, usually TABAS and NAIN both they do have Silk in their pile.
How old is your rug?
Can you send me some pictures?
